About 6 in 10 Americans actively think about how their vacation dollars impact local communities. So, this summer, there’s no better place to visit than Puerto Rico.

As we head into the summer travel season, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC) released the findings of a survey, which found that 9 in 10 (89%) Americans like it when the money they spend on vacation helps the local economy of a destination. In parallel paths, one-quarter (24%) of Americans want to help Puerto Rico recover, but aren’t sure how. With over 135 hotels, 4,000 restaurants, 13 golf courses, 16 casinos and over 184 tourist attractions open, Puerto Rico is ready to welcome visitors. In fact, the Island has already welcomed thousands of visitors with record-breaking numbers this past Spring Break. Visiting Puerto Rico this summer and staying at its wide array of hotels and other accommodations, eating the delicious cuisine at restaurants and shopping at unique local businesses is the best way to support this fellow U.S. territory.

The Power of Tourism

Americans who are consciously thinking about the impact their tourism dollars have on local economies and are also looking for a way to help Puerto Rico should definitely consider taking a trip to the Island this summer. Tourism contributes to 10% to Puerto Rico’s GDP, making it a powerful tool for development, with ample capacity to transform the Puerto Rican economy in the short term. It’s also an industry that generates direct and indirect jobs, with a multiplier effect in other segments of the economy. So, simply having fun in Puerto Rico can go a long way.

Worry-free Travel

Travel outside of the U.S. can be a hassle. Passports have kept nearly one-in-three (29%) Americans from taking a trip outside of the U.S., second only to the high cost of travel-related expenses. But, Puerto Rico is a piece of U.S. paradise in the Caribbean, making it an easily accessible destination. No passport is required for U.S. citizens, which means there’s no need to go through customs. This is especially good news for the 77% of Americans who feel more comfortable visiting a U.S. location for a beach vacation than one outside the U.S. Plus, for those worried about the high cost of travel-related expenses, there are a number of deals to Puerto Rico available here.

Vacation Must-haves

Three-quarters (76%) of Americans surveyed consider beautiful weather an essential component of the perfect vacation, followed by new cultural experiences – such as trying new cuisines (56%), experiencing a different culture (51%), learning about the history of their destination (51%) and exploring nature (53%). Beyond having beautiful weather year-round, Puerto Rico has something to offer every type of traveler: the foodies, the beach goers, the history buffs, the nature lovers, the adrenaline seekers and more. From the historic “El Morro” fortress and cobblestone streets of Old San Juan to three of the world’s five bioluminescent bays peppered throughout, travelers are guaranteed a rich cultural experience.
