Puerto Rico Resort Exceeds Forest Stewardship Fund Donation Goal
May 30, 2018
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (May 29, 2018) – Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort presented a donation of $16,000 to the National Forest Foundation (NFF), raised by resort guests in an effort to aid in the restoration and recovery of neighboring El Yunque National Rainforest, which was damaged during Hurricane Maria. The fundraising program, which began at the resort’s re-opening on March 1, far exceeded its goal of $10,000 thanks to the generosity of the resort community.
The donated funds, which were presented to NFF’s Eastern Region Program Director Mark Shelley, will go directly toward the rebuilding of the scenic Angelito Bridge and Trail that leads to a section of the Río Mameyes, featuring natural pool Charco Las Damas. The river is designated as one of three wild and scenic rivers in the forest because of its biological, historic and recreational values.
“Through NFF’s Forest Stewardship Fund and the resort’s commitment to the island’s recovery, the donations from resort guests will be used to replace the Angelito Bridge and Trail, allowing river access to be restored to the community and visitors of Puerto Rico,” said Mark Shelley, Eastern Region Program Director of the National Forest Foundation. “With the support of the U.S. Forest Service, and local partners like Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort, we are addressing restoration challenges in this beloved forest.”
“Our goal of raising $10,000 was exceeded thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our guests,” said Nils Stolzlechner, general manager of Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort. “We are so appreciative of their continued support of beautiful Puerto Rico and thank them for their contribution to our community.”
This initiative reaffirms the resort’s strong commitment to the protection of its surrounding ecosystem and the environment. The resort has been working closely with the El Yunque National Rainforest team to organize volunteer programs for interested guests, providing a boxed lunch along with transportation to and from the site location, offering guests the opportunity to become part of the rainforest’s recovery. Reservations can be made with the resort’s front desk, or by emailing yunquevolunteers@gmail.com.
