Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation and the Tourism Service Excellence Awards
Among Ministry’s Initiatives to Enhance Industry’s Quality
KINGSTON, Jamaica – June 6, 2018: As part of its commitment to Jamaica’s development of the tourism industry, including the investment in human capital, the Ministry of Tourism has embarked on a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening the capability of its current workforce. Among them, the launch of the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation (JCTI) and the Tourism Service Excellence Awards (TSEA).
A first of its kind in Jamaica and the Caribbean, the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation is part of the Ministry’s five-pillar growth strategy to provide new products, new markets, new partnerships, new investments and the renewal of human capital. It is expected to significantly and positively impact the growth of Jamaica’s hospitality and tourism education.
“The quality of our tourism product, the innovative development of our human capital and Jamaica’s continued recognition as the preeminent go-to destination in the Caribbean are inseparably linked,” notes Hon. Edmund Bartlett, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism. “With the Jamaica Centre of Tourism Innovation and Tourism Service Excellence Awards, we are investing now in our people for the prosperity of our collective future.”
Implemented by the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), JCTI offers specialist education certification programmes in tourism and hospitality. Its mission is to develop the cadre of workers delivering service excellence to support Jamaica’s competitive edge as a world-class destination.
Earlier this year, the island’s tourism product received a boost with the graduation of 150 persons certified in Hospitality Industry Analytics and accredited as Hospitality Supervisors. Individuals also received the American Culinary Federation certification.
Service excellence and the development of human capital are essential for a sustainable and successful tourism sector. To this end, TPDCo created the Tourism Service Excellence Awards to recognize, celebrate and reward those dedicated individuals and organizations whose exemplary service has helped raise the island’s tourism industry to the level that it is today. The awards are an integral part of Ministry’s efforts to improve the tourism sector”s competitiveness by motivating stakeholders to create compelling experiences and adopt best practices.
