JAMAICA’S BOBSLED TEAM IS GOING FOR THE GOLD AT THE WINTER OLYMPICS
Jamaica Qualifies for Three Bobsled Events at the Winter Olympics In Beijing
Kingston, Jamaica: Jan. 2022: Team Jamaica is heading to the Winter Olympics to compete in 3 bobsled events: the four-man bobsled, two-man, and the new event called the women’s mono bob. Nearly 30 years after “Cool Runnings” became a feel-good hit movie and for the first time since the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan, Jamaica qualified for the competitive four-man bobsled event. Although the four-man roster has not been announced yet, Shanwayne Stephens has been piloting the four-man sled in international events with Rolando Reid, Ashley Watson, Matthew Wekpe as push athletes.
Jamaica bobsled rose to fame with its Olympic debut at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, its four-man team that failed to finish inspiring the 1993 Disney film, “Cool Runnings.” At least one Jamaican men’s sled competed in every Olympics from 1988 through 2002, then again in 2014, with the best finish of 14th. The last time Jamaica had a four-man sled was at the 1998 Nagano Games. That was also the last time the Olympic team had a link to the famed 1998 quartet — brothers Chris and Dudley Stokes. Chris is now the president of Jamaica’s bobsled federation. The Olympics are set to begin on Feb. 4.
