Owned and managed by the Garbutt family since 1987, Calabash Luxury Boutique Hotel, a Relais & Châteaux property, is the gold standard on The Spice Island. On a small cove in Prickly Bay, Calabash Grenada, as it’s known, sits on a small beach called Lance Aux Epines, about a 10-minute drive from the more popular Grand Anse Beach. Spread out over 8 acres, the resort on the south coast enjoys a 60% repeat visitor rate with staff knowing guests by name rather than by room number. “Family is one of life’s greatest treasures; a philosophy the whole Calabash family passionately believes in, “said Adele Garbutt, director, “the team is one large extended family and when you arrive, you”ll immediately feel part of it.” Resort owner Leo Garbutt was named Caribbean Hotelier of the Year by the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) during Caribbean Travel Marketplace held this past January in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Named after the calabash gourd that grows on the island, the hotel invites with an infinity-edge swimming pool, spa, floodlit tennis courts, dive centre, watersports, 2 restaurants and a trio of bars to write home about.  With 30 suites and 5 Estate Homes, or villas, the hotel is a ten-minute drive from the Maurice Bishop International Airport and 20 minutes from the picturesque capital city of St. George’s with its must-see Spice Market.

Reopening on October 3, the resort welcomes couples and families. “Calabash is a very tranquil environment with lots of space for physical distancing, “adds Adele Garbutt, “with 8 acres of land and only 30 suites, Calabash naturally lends itself to social distancing, however, we will continually to do all we can to ensure the latest guidelines are followed.” www.calabashhotel.com/

Stylish in a horseshoe shape around 8 acres of fragrant gardens, 30 suites are spacious in various categories from Junior Suites with high ceilings and balconies saluting the gardens and the sea to Superior Suites with picturesque balconies where breakfast is served, Deluxe Suites with French Doors separating the lounge areas from the bedroom and Pool Suites come with a private pool and freestanding bathtub on the deck. Worth the splurge, Penthouse Suite is the signature suite impeccably designed as the ultimate escape for couples on a mission to relax. All suites are stocked with Elemis skincare products and outfitted with ceiling fans, air conditioning and gratis Wi-Fi. The recipient of AAA’s ‘Best of Housekeeping’ award for 2020, the resort is working with several agencies and with Relais & Châteaux to ensure the latest guidelines are followed. “Suites will have 2 days between guests checking out and the next guests checking in to facilitate deep cleaning and disinfecting,” adds Adele Garbutt, “we’ll offer complimentary sanitizer in our suites for guests to use. “A variety of packages offer complimentary suite upgrades, candlelit dinner on the beach, chocolate truffles, bottle of Prosecco, massages, and gifts for kids. For the more adventurous, packages also encourage island hopping between Grenada and Barbados and Grenada and Saint Lucia. https://calabashhotel.com/offers

Bring your appetite

Starting with breakfast, the hotel’s impeccable culinary offerings begin with the aptly named ‘unique breakfast’ that is, indeed, unique served right on the beach or on your suite’s private balcony or terrace. Tempting with a delectable menu from fruit yogurt to crêpes with cinnamon and nutmeg; the artful al fresco breakfast is a treat to kick start the rest of the day. For lunch, the island’s plentiful bounty is the star attraction at The Beach Club. Serving tapas from noon – 5 pm, choices are many with standouts like the ginger chilli chicken. Lunch from noon to 3 pm tempts with a variety of options like spicy fish cakes, seared tuna burgers and for those ditching the diet, lobster mac and cheese is a must-try. At tea time, sandwiches and cakes are served and for a light bite before dinner, canapés are delivered to every room at 6pm.

Dinner is a grand affair at one of the finest restaurants on the island. Open-air and vine-covered, Rhodes Restaurant is an elegant dining room dimly lit at night by the flicker of torches.  Dinner is served from 7:00pm and the Piano Lounge open for a pre-dinner cocktail or an après-dinner nightcap. A flavor fusion of international dishes and Caribbean recipes, standouts aim to please like a shrimp and callaloo tartlet and snapper drizzled in saffron sauce. For those with a yen to try Asian, seared barracuda with a miso broth and rice noodles is the real deal. Divinely decadent, banana pudding with salted caramel ice cream is perfectly shareable. “Our 2 open air restaurants will operate at lower capacity to ensure tables are spaced at a safe distance, “notes Adele Garbutt, “we will supply guests and staff with face masks and gloves, for everyone”s protection and comfort .”
