ARUBA CELEBRATES WORLD TURTLE DAY ON MAY 23

Turtle Hatching Season is Underway in Aruba

OranjestadAruba: MAY 2022:  In Aruba , turtle hatching season has officially begun with beaches and nature lovers preparing for the yearly event.  Ahead of World Turtle Day on May 23, volunteers from Aruba’s Save-The-Sea-Turtles organization, TurtugAruba, are monitoring and protecting turtle nests on various beaches while hotels and resorts are offering turtle watching events and opportunities to see the hatchlings as they emerge from the sea.  Visit https://www.bucuti.com/turtle-nesting for the Sea Turtle Nesting Calendar.

Eagle Beach – While visiting Eagle Beach, or during a stay at the Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, catch Leatherback hatchlings make their passage into the sea for the first time. Boca Grandi – The premier location for windsurfing, Boca Grandi is one of the main places to catch sea turtles as they hatch. If conditions permit and you would like to see full-grown Sea Turtles while snorkeling, Boca Grandi is a great place to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures.

Dos Playas – If you prefer to stay on land, enjoy a leisurely hike in Arikok National Park, which accounts for 18% of the entire island. There, you can stop by Dos Playas, the main nesting spot for Leatherback Sea Turtles, and get amazing views of the Caribbean Sea.

A few fast facts about Sea Turtles:

  • Sea Turtles were the first visitors to the island of Aruba, long before humans arrived
  • Roughly 80 eggs per nest are hatched from Aruban Leatherback sea turtles each year
  • There are a total of four species that have been found nesting in Aruba: the Leatherback, the Loggerhead, the Green, and the Hawksbill
