April 2020 MONTEGO BAY – Jamaica is a treasure trove of natural beauty secrets and easy Do-It-At-Home (DIY) spa treatments. Tamieka Frazer-Lewis, manager of the Irie Baths & Spa at S Hotel Jamaica in Montego Bay, offers up her favorite homegrown beauty treatment recipes making the most of the simplest ingredients you can find right in your kitchen, that will leave you looking and feeling alright.

Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Body Scrub – a buzz-worthy cellulite busting self-care ritual
“Concentrated caffeine is known for lessening cellulite in many topical creams, but Jamaicans have been onto the miraculous properties of coffee for generations,” says Tamieka. “Massaging the grinds into the skin in circular motions helps smooth the surface by exfoliating dead skin and stimulating the break down of cellulite underneath.”
This simple recipe mixes 2 cups of mid-coarsely ground Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee (or use whatever you have in your cupboard), ½ cup of organic sugar and 3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil combined together in a paste.
To begin the treatment, take a hot shower (which replaces the steam room as the skin should be moist and warm to open pores). Stand in the shower and use long circular motions from neck to toes, concentrating on areas of concern. Rinse coffee mixture from your skin and add apply lotion for more hydration. The treatment should be done three times per week for optimal results.
Cornmeal Coconut Facial Scrub – Sounds too good to just go on your face
Your pantry is a great source for DIY self-care spa treatments – just reach into the back and see what you have there! Tamieka’s favorite homemade facial scrub uses surprisingly powerful cornmeal (who knew?) also known as maize.
“While it may not be dominant in our favorite cooking recipes, cornmeal is a versatile exfoliate for skin with many benefits. It not only removes dead skin cells, but contains antioxidants, zinc, iron, vitamin C and folic acid, perfect for any skincare routine.”
This easy treatment recipe calls for ½ cup of organic, finely ground cornmeal with two teaspoons of organic coconut milk to mix into a sweet paste. Apply to damp skin in an upward, circular motion for two minutes. Rinse with warm water then pat dry and apply your favorite moisturizer to energize and restore.
When Life Hands You Lemons…Use them to their beauty benefit
It’s an old saying, and perhaps one that resonates with us at this challenging time. While lemons grow plentifully in Jamaica, fortunately for the rest of us, it’s a fruit that’s readily available at any local grocery store.
Lemon Tea: “Start the day with freshly squeezed lemon juice and warm water,” says Tamika. “While lemons are acidic outside the body, they create an immediately alkaline inside the body, which is imperative to keep our body healthy.”
Skin, Hair + Nail Treatment: “The healing agents in lemons will refresh and revive tired skin. Lemons also cool the skin, and help tighten enlarged pores. They have the healing power of calcium, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium; all of which help improve the appearance and condition of our skin, hair, and nails. Lemons also act as an antioxidant, astringent, stimulant, hydrator and the list goes on.”
Lemon Bath Soak: This citrus rich bath is perfect after a #lockdown workout. Tamieka suggests squeezing the juice of five or six whole lemons into your warm, running bath. If you don’t have lemons, 3/4 cup of bottled lemon juice will work just as well. Soak, inhale that beautiful lemon aroma, and relax.

ABOUT S HOTEL JAMAICA: S Hotel Jamaica made its debut on January 27, 2019 overlooking famed Doctor’s Cave Beach. Buzzing bars, a high-spirited pool scene, the exclusive Sky Deck, international restaurants, a café, a gym and spacious modern guest rooms, thoughtfully combine to create a modern and effervescent sense of place, serving as a stylish basecamp to explore the area’s new shops, restaurants and entertainment. Prominent Jamaican historical and cultural design elements are woven in with modern interpretation, including prints by famed Jamaican artist Michael Thompson and local lumber artist, Tamara Harding.
The new S Hotel is centrally located on Montego Bay’s irie Hip Strip, recently re-christened Jimmy Cliff Boulevard, just five minutes from Sangster International Airport. S Hotel is the second hotel project from Crissa Hotels. The group includes the popular Spanish Court Hotel and the Spanish Court Worthington event venue in Kingston, and in Montego Bay, Usain Bolt’sâ?¯Tracks & Records restaurant outpost located adjacent to S Hotel Jamaica.
